Life doesn’t come with a manual. At one point or another, all of us face seasons of difficulty — grief, anxiety, relationship struggles, or feeling simply overwhelmed. In those moments, what we often need most is a safe space, a listening ear, and the assurance that we’re not alone.

At Ruach Counselling Centre, we’re here to walk that road with you.

Who We Are

In early 2010, the leaders of Coronation Avenue Methodist Church recognized a growing need for accessible, affordable counselling in the Helderberg Basin. Many individuals were facing serious personal challenges—ranging from mental health struggles and addiction to bereavement, family conflict, and economic hardship.

In response, the Church made a courageous decision: to establish a counselling centre rooted in the Church community, staffed by trained lay counsellors. Their approach was guided by research affirming the therapeutic value of lay counselling.

Launching the Centre required significant financial commitment. Initial seed funding was secured from overseas donors—with the understanding that it would only cover the first year. From then on, the Church would assume full financial responsibility for sustaining this vital ministry.

Despite obstacles, including those brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centre has grown steadily. What began with just four counsellors has expanded into a team of ten. From the outset, Ruach Counselling Centre has provided general counselling to all members of the community—without exclusion. The emphasis has always been on offering non-directive, non-judgemental, person-centred care, grounded in respect, confidentiality, and compassionate support.

Clients requiring professional psychiatric or clinical intervention are referred appropriately. A structured system for counsellor training, selection, and supervision has been in place since the beginning. While administrative responsibilities were initially managed by a dedicated manager, they are now overseen by the Church Administrative Officer.

Ruach Counselling Centre was founded with one goal in mind: to make affordable, compassionate counselling accessible to everyone in our community. Whether you’re navigating a personal crisis or just need someone to talk to, our team of trained counsellors is ready to meet you with empathy and professionalism.

We believe that mental and emotional health should never be a luxury. That’s why we strive to keep our services affordable — so that cost is never a barrier to care.

We know that many people avoid counselling because they worry about the cost. At Ruach Counselling Centre, we offer a flat fee of R250, and work with individuals to ensure our support is as financially accessible as possible.
